Fans of modern and contemporary architecture find Chicago to be a fantasy. Just about anywhere you go in the city, there’s an architectural jewel around the corner—and many of them will take your breath away. But why settle for looking at monumental pieces of architecture, when you can live in them?
Buildings by Mies van der Rohe, considered one of the greatest architects of the 20th century, are perfect examples of how some of the best modern architecture is available to consumers in the form of Chicago condos for sale. Chicago has more buildings designed by the master than any other city, and many of the buildings are full of Chicago real estate for sale. Here’s a list of the addresses, and the reasons why you’ll love living in them:
- 330 W. Diversey (Lakeview)
- 340 W. Diversey (Lakeview)
- 2400 N. Lakeview (Lincoln Park)
- 900 Lake Shore Drive (or LSD, as Chicagoans call it for short. It probably has something to do with the views of Lake Michigan that will make you delirious) (Streeterville)
- 910 Lake Shore Drive (Streeterville)
- 860 Lake Shore Drive (Streeterville)
- 880 Lake Shore Drive (Streeterville)
You’ll never get sick of looking at your Chicago home. Chicagoans simply refer to the German architect as “Mies,” and his towers of Chicago luxury condos are “spartan yet graceful” structures of steel and glass, as a recent article in Chicago Social put it. The article describes the “Miesian” qualities of timelessness, coming from light and symmetry. Think big, rectangular windows and orderly vertical beams. “Style like that doesn’t go out of style,” Chicago Tribune architecture critic Blair Kamin said in the article.
You’ll never get sick of looking at the view from your Chicago home. Commonwealth Plaza, at 330 and 340 W. Diversey in Lakeview, for example, is close to Lake Michigan and sports some of the most amazing views you can find anywhere in the city. It’s home to the only penthouse that Mies ever designed, a 2,400 square-foot piece of Chicago real estate that looks out on Lincoln Park, Lake Michigan, the downtown skyline and Wrigley Field. What more could you want?
You can brag to your friends, and they’ll think you have impeccable taste. There’s undoubtedly a cache that comes with living in Chicago real estate that was designed by such an important figure. “It’s not an apartment, it’s a statement,” one resident was said in the article. “I need to live in a Mies at least once,” said an interior designer. “It feels very Chicago,” another resident said. “This building is a modernist monument. It’s studied around the world. I’m living in a museum and when I look out the window it’s like taking in an exhibition of the past century’s greatest architecture.”
You’ll be living in the real thing. Because Mies’ work is so famous, it’s widely imitated. “I don’t want to be interesting, I want to be good,” is a well-known quote from Mies. Architectural fads come and go—but if you buy one and move in, you’re stuck with it. Don’t let your Chicago real estate be just trendy or “interesting,” as Mies put it, make sure it’s classic, lasting and “good.”
