Chicago Condos: Do Your Part and Live in a LEED Certified Building.

Earth Day was created in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to raise awareness about the Earth and how to protect and preserve our environment.  Earth Day is April 22nd and is usually celebrated throughout the week with many special events and media features, including ways to raise awareness on global issues, tips on living green, and cleaning up your community.  In honor of Earth Day, here are ways to ensure that your Chicago condo or other Chicago real estate is environmentally friendly.

First, check if the Chicago home you are interested in is a part of a green community.  For instance, many new construction buildings throughout Chicago are LEED certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) buildings. Older buildings are also doing their part to comply and make changes in order to become more eco-friendly.

LEED is a rating system that determines whether buildings are built according to environmentally friendly standards.  LEED buildings can have one of four types of certification – certified, silver, gold, and platinum. Some characteristics of LEED certified buildings included energy saving tinted glass, environmentally friendly materials, and water efficiency in the building.

Another characteristic of eco-friendly communities is that the management companies and even the residents themselves often share tips on how to live in a more eco- friendly and environmentally cautious manner. These Chicago condos and residential communities typically encourage recycling, planting trees and flowers, car sharing through a service such as i-Go car sharing, using public transportation, energy saving light bulbs, and more.

Your Chicago real estate agent can help you find Chicago condos, buildings, and communities that have LEED certification throughout the city including 111 South Wacker Drive , One South Dearborn, 71 South Wacker Drive, 340 on the Park, and the brand new Aqua tower at Lakeshore East.
